The Erie and Champlain Canals Plus Historical Schenectady (3 days & 2 nights)

Waterford is the oldest incorporated city in the United States and is located at the confluence of the Mohawk (Erie Barge Canal) and Champlain Canal/Hudson River.  The Waterford Flight of Five is a set of five locks that are a part of the New York State Barge Canal System.  With a total elevation of 165 feet, it is the highest combined set of lift locks in the world and the Erie Champlain Canal Boat Company provides a personalized interpretive canal boat tour through the locks.  A short drive away is Falls View Park and Cohoes Falls, that is a 75-foot waterfall on the Mohawk River, and is the second largest in New York State.  There’s also Schenectady for a walk through the Schenectady Stockade an area rich with Revolutionary War and Erie Canal history.  Cobblestone streets and late 17th and early 18th century buildings add to the charm of this unique community.  Fort Hunter – at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site where you can walk along the original Erie Canal from 1825 and the Enlarged Erie from 1841.  Tour the visitor center and canal store at historic Lock 28.  Tour includes a stop at the Schenectady County Historical Society Museum of Schenectady History that contains 18th and 19th century furnishings, artifacts of Dutch heritage.  A perfect way to conclude is a visit to the Mabee Farm, the oldest building still standing in the Mohawk Valley and a part of the Schenectady Historical Society.
